Why invest in a Bunnahabhain cask
What actually drives the value of a whisky cask?
Cask value is shaped by a combination of factors: how long the spirit has matured, the cask type it's matured in, and demand for finished single malt at the point you come to sell. Distillery reputation and the rarity of the spirit itself also play a part. None of this is guaranteed, and value can increase or decrease depending on how the wider market behaves.
Is cask investment risky?
Like any investment, yes. Cask value can rise or fall, and there's no fixed return or guaranteed outcome. Unlike some assets, a cask is also a physical, ageing product, so its condition and the market for matured whisky both matter. We'd always recommend treating this as a long-term, considered investment rather than a short term financial play.
How is this different from other whisky cask investment schemes?
Your cask is purchased and held directly with Bunnahabhain, not through a broker or third-party intermediary. That means full legal title in your name, direct access to your cask, and maturation managed by the same team who distilled the spirit. Cask investment has attracted scrutiny in recent years due to unclear ownership structures and unrealistic promises elsewhere in the market. This is a direct relationship with the distillery, with no broker involved.
Can I sell my cask before it's finished maturing?
Yes, there's no fixed minimum holding period before you can look to sell. That said, cask value and buyer interest are generally shaped by how far along the maturation is, so timing is worth discussing with your own circumstances in mind.
What are my options when I'm ready to sell?
You can sell back to CVH Spirits at market price, sell on the secondary market yourself, or sell in bulk to an independent bottler. Which route makes sense will depend on your cask, its maturation, and market conditions at the time.
Do I need any specialist knowledge to invest in a cask?
No. Our team will talk you through cask type, maturation, and what to expect at every stage, whether this is your first time owning a cask or not. It's worth doing your own research into how whisky cask investment works more broadly too, particularly around value and liquidity, so you're going in with realistic expectations.
What proof of ownership will I have?
You'll receive a Delivery Order from the bonded warehouse confirming your cask, your ownership, and a unique cask number. This is the same form of documentation used across the wider industry to evidence legal title.
Is my cask insured?
Yes, insurance is included as part of your warehousing for the first five years. Cover beyond that point can be discussed as part of your ongoing storage arrangement.
How does this compare to investing in whisky by the bottle?
Bottle investment relies on an already finished product and an existing collector or resale market. Cask investment means owning the spirit earlier in its life, before it's bottled, with its value shaped by maturation and market demand over a longer timeframe. The two carry different risk profiles and different levels of involvement, and neither offers guaranteed returns.
How many bottles will I get from my cask?
The final number of bottles will depend on the size of your cask, how long it matures and the amount lost naturally through evaporation – known as the “angel's share”.
As a guide, a standard Bourbon Barrel typically yields around 250 bottles at 46% ABV, while a Bordeaux Hogshead typically yields around 300 bottles.
What are the ongoing costs after 5 years?
The average cost of warehouse rent is £75/year depending on cask type, but we will be happy to provide a quote.
Can I customise the labels on my bottles?
Yes. This is not a service provided through Bunnahabhain, but when it’s time to bottle your cask, you can use a 3rd party bottler approved by CVH Spirits to personalise your labels with a name, date, or message, making it a truly bespoke release. Labels would be subject to approval by CVH.
Do I need to be a resident of the UK to purchase a cask?
No, you do not need to be a UK resident to purchase a cask of new make spirit in Scotland, but you will need to provide proof of residence for Anti-Money Laundering (AML) checks. Additionally, you'll be responsible for complying with the import regulations, duties, and taxes in your country of residence or domicile.
How do I verify the cask actually exists and is in my name?
When you purchase your cask you will receive a Delivery Order from the bonded warehouse or distillery, which confirms ownership and provides a unique cask number.
What happens if the distillery shuts down or is sold?
Your legal ownership of the cask remains intact, provided you have proper documentation (e.g., a cask certificate, bonded warehouse details, and clear title). A change in distillery ownership does not invalidate your cask ownership.
Will I get re-gauging or valuation reports?
You can request a re-gauge of your cask at any point at a price agreed upon with CVH spirits for their services.
What are the tax implications of cask ownership?
Scotch Whisky is not subject to VAT on purchase value, or capital gains tax while maturing in a bonded warehouse. However, we are not tax advisors and we recommend consulting a qualified tax professional if you wish to explore the tax implications and potential benefits of investing in whisky casks.
How much does it cost to bottle the whisky?
A quote will be provided by CVH at the time of bottling, or you can go to a 3rd party bottler if they are approved by CVH.
Is this whisky for resale?
Cask purchases are intended for private individuals and personal consumption. However, you can re-sale back to CVH Spirits at Market Price, Resell on the secondary market or sell bulk to an independent bottler.
How much could I make off this whisky investment?
Like any investment, the value of your cask can fluctuate, meaning it can increase or decrease. The market conditions, including supply and demand, overall whisky performance, and specific trends like popular distilleries, can all impact cask value.
What happens at the end of maturation?
When you decide your cask is ready, you can do one of the following:
- Re-sale back to CVH Spirits at market price
- Bottling under own label (after 3+ years maturation) at a at CVH Spirits or bottler approved by CVH
- Resale on secondary market
- Transfer of ownership subject to approval by CVH Spirits
- Bulk sale to independent bottlers
