About Us

Welcome to Bunnahabhain

We are Bunnahabhain Distillery (pronounced BU-NAH-HAV-EN), one of just ten Islay distilleries in the distinct and protected Scotch whisky-making region of Islay.

Since 1881, we’ve been committed to excellence, combining exceptional craftsmanship and an uncompromising approach to produce our unpeated, robust and complex Bunnahabhain single malt.

Uncompromising Spirit

To craft our distinct unpeated whisky, we maintain a steadfast attention to detail, ensuring that every bottle of Bunnahabhain meets our exacting standards from exceptional ingredients, masterful craftsmanship and our robust, complex character.

Our Heritage

Bunnahabhain, meaning 'mouth of the river', is one of the oldest single malt distilleries. Established in 1881 by the blender, William Robertson in partnership with brothers William and James Greenlees, the distillery and the surrounding town of Bunnahabhain, were built together, providing necessary roads and homes for the distillery workers and their families.

Production officially began in1883, and today, nearly 150 years later, Bunnahabhain still preserves the time- honoured methods of whisky production in a process that has hardly changed since William Robertson and the Greenlees brothers first set eyes on this beautiful, rugged and remote north-eastern corner of Islay.

Our Community

Like many Islay distilleries, Bunnahabhain is more than just a place where whisky is made; it's a vibrant and active community. Many of our team members have historical family ties to both Islay and Bunnahabhain, with their skills and knowledge handed down from previous generations. This deep connection to the local community and to the beautiful and rugged Hebridean island of Islay infuses every drop of our whisky with a sense of warmth, place and tradition.

Our Islay

Islay’s rich maritime and cultural heritage has been shaped over the centuries by Mesolithic, Norse, Gaelic and Celtic influences. By the mid 12th century, Islay had established itself as a medieval sea kingdom, ruled over by the powerful Lords of the Isles, and a key maritime hub at the heart of the world’s principal trade routes. Through inheritance, it later came under the control of the Clan Donald, before being governed by direct Scottish rule from 1493.

Today, Islay is known for its whisky production. Warmed by the Gulf Stream from the vast Atlantic Ocean to the west, Islay remains a captivating destination, celebrated for its history, breath-taking landscapes, and world-famous Islay whisky distilleries.
