New Make Spirit Cask Investment

Own a cask from Bunnahabhain

Imagine owning a barrel of Bunnahabhain from the very beginning – before the imbuing of flavour from the finest, hand selected casks, the salty Hebridean air, and the passing of time have shaped it. We’re offering a unique opportunity to invest in a cask of new make spirit, filled and and laid down in our traditional dunnage warehouses overlooking Bunnahabhain Bay. This is not just whisky waiting to mature — it’s the beginning of a journey. A blank canvas for flavour, character, and complexity, drawn from the same copper stills and Margadale spring water that have defined our spirit since 1881.

Investing in new make spirit cask ownership allows you to witness the alchemy of time at work, as the fresh, fruity distillate transforms year by year into rich, expressive single malt.Held securely at the distillery and nurtured by our team, your cask matures slowly at our rugged, coastal warehouses on Bunnahabhain Bay— a process that cannot be rushed, replicated, or repeated. Whether you see it as a personal passion, a long-term gift, or a legacy bottling to share with family, owning a new make cask from Bunnahabhain is a rare chance to be part of something timeless, from its very first drop.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is new make spirit?

New make spirit is freshly distilled whisky spirit that has not yet been aged in a cask. It’s the clear, high-strength liquid that will develop into single malt whisky over time through maturation in oak.

What is Staoisha?

A robust and characterful peated new make spirit produced at the renowned Bunnahabhain Distillery on Islay

How long can I leave my cask to mature?

Casks will be matured for a minimum of 5 years, but casks can be matured for up to 10 years or more, depending on your preference and the type of cask selected.

Where will my cask be stored?

Your cask will be matured in our bonded dunnage warehouses at Bunnahabhain Distillery on Islay, where it will be carefully monitored in the ideal coastal climate.

What is the difference of having the cask mature in Bunnahabhain or in Deanston?

Maturing a cask of Staoisha spirit at Bunnahabhain offers a slow, steady ageing process due to Islay's cool, maritime climate and traditional dunnage warehouses. This environment helps preserve the peat intensity while gradually introducing coastal, briny notes and subtle oak influence. In contrast, maturation at Deanston—on the mainland—occurs in a drier, climate with racked warehouses, which can lead to faster oak interaction, and a shift toward sweeter, spicier, and fruitier flavours.

Can I visit my cask?

You can arrange a visit to the distillery to see your cask and even taste a sample as it matures.

What types of casks are available?

For this initial period we offer Ex-Bourbon Barrels (1st fill), Hogsheads (refill) with opportunity to re-cask at later date , and 1st fill Oloroso Sherry Butts . Availability varies and will be discussed at the time of enquiry.

How many bottles will I get from my cask?

This depends on the size of the cask, how long it matures, and natural evaporation (the “angel’s share”). A standard bourbon barrel typically yields around 250 bottles at 46% ABV, while a sherry butt can yield up to 600.

How much does a cask cost?

New make casks start from £5,650, depending on cask type. This  warehousing for the first 5 years with 5 years insurance included — a full cost breakdown will be provided upon enquiry. Cost does not include bottling.

What are the ongoing costs after 5 years?

The average cost of warehouse rent is £75/year depending on cask type, but we will be happy to provide a quote

Can I customise the labels on my bottles?

Yes. This is not a service provided through Bunnahabhain, but when it’s time to bottle your cask, you can use a 3rd party bottler approved by CVH Spirits to personalise your labels with a name, date, or message, making it a truly bespoke release. Labels would be subject to approval by CVH

Do I need to be a resident of the UK to purchase a cask?

No, you do not need to be a UK resident to purchase a cask of new make spirit in Scotland, but you will need to provide proof of residence for Anti-Money Laundering (AML) checks. Additionally, you'll be responsible for complying with the import regulations, duties, and taxes in your country of residence or domicile

How do I verify the cask actually exists and is in my name?

When you purchase your cask you will receive a Delivery Order from the bonded warehouse or distillery, which confirms ownership and provides a unique cask number.

What happens if the distillery shuts down or is sold?

Your legal ownership of the cask remains intact, provided you have proper documentation (e.g., a cask certificate, bonded warehouse details, and clear title). A change in distillery ownership does not invalidate your cask ownership.

Will I get re-gauging or valuation reports?

You can request a re-gauge of your cask at any point at a price agreed upon with CVH spirits for their services

What are the tax implications of cask ownership?

Currently, investing in whisky casks doesn't trigger Capital Gains Tax (CGT), as whisky casks are classified as "wasting assets (chattels) " due to the "angels' share" (natural evaporation). However, there are some tax implications to be aware of, including and VAT and alcohol duty

How much does it cost to bottle the whisky?

A quote will be provided by CVH at the time of bottling, or you can go to a 3rd party bottler if they are approved by CVH.

Is this whisky for resale?

Cask purchases are intended for private individuals and personal consumption. However, you can re-sale back to CVH Spirits at Market Price, Resell on the secondary market or sell bulk to an independent bottler.

How much could I make off this whisky investment?

Like any investment, the value of your cask can fluctuate, meaning it can increase or decrease. The market conditions, including supply and demand, overall whisky performance, and specific trends like popular distilleries, can all impact cask value.
