Bunnahabhain has earned recognition across some of the most respected competitions in the whisky industry. The 25 Year Old was awarded a trophy and 98 points by the IWSC, with judges praising its elegance and finesse after 25 years in ex-sherry casks. The 18 Year Old has also received IWSC Gold recognition, alongside medals from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the World Whiskies Awards. In 2016, Bunnahabhain was named Distillery of the Year at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, with the 25 Year Old also taking Best Distillers' Single Malt Scotch. 

Bunnahabhain whiskies have been entered into several of the industry's most established competitions. These include the International Wine & Spirit Competition, which has been a benchmark for quality since 1969 and assesses entries through rigorous double-blind tasting. Expressions have also been recognised at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, where all entries are evaluated through strict blind tasting by respected industry professionals. The World Whiskies Awards and The Scotch Whisky Masters have featured Bunnahabhain entries too. 

Several things set Bunnahabhain apart in competition. All expressions are non-chill filtered, retaining a natural, rich, creamy mouthfeel, with no added colour, allowing the true influence of the cask to come through. The predominantly unpeated style, combined with sherry cask maturation and coastal influence, produces a richness and complexity that holds up well under blind tasting conditions. 

Bunnahabhain releases new expressions throughout the year, spanning the core range and limited editions. The 12 Year Old, 18 Year Old and 25 Year Old have accumulated recognition across many years of consistent performance. Festival bottlings, special cask finishes and small-batch releases are also produced regularly, often showcasing experimental maturation or peated styles. Fèis Ìle each spring tends to be a particularly notable occasion for new distillery releases.

It has a well-established reputation, though "best" is always subjective in whisky.
